The Province of Gauteng is colourful, vibrant and dynamic. This is also where the gold capital of the world, Johannesburg, is situated.

Johannesburg, also nicknamed Egoli (place of gold), is a city of contrasts. Mine dumps and headgear stand proudly as symbols of its rich past, while modern architecture rubs shoulders with glorious examples of 19th century engineering prowess. The busy streets ring out with the call of fruit sellers and street vendors, and an exciting blend of ethnic and Western art and cultural activities is reflected in theatres and open-air arenas throughout the city.

Some 50 km north of Johannesburg lies Pretoria. As administrative capital of the Republic, the city is dominated by government services and the diplomatic corps of foreign representatives in South Africa. The pace of the city is relaxed and pervaded by a sense of history. Church Square, around which Pretoria developed, was the main venue for trade, recreation and religious gatherings in the early days, and many buildings of historic and architectural importance have been retained.

Although the province is highly urbanised and industrialised, it contains wetlands of international importance, such as Blesbokspruit.

This summer-rainfall area has hot summers and cold winters with frost. Hail is common during the summer thunderstorms. Snowfalls rarely occur.

Gauteng’s agricultural sector is geared to provide the cities and towns of the province with daily fresh produce, including dairy products, vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs and flowers. A large area of the province falls within the so-called maize triangle and groundnuts, sunflowers, cotton and sorghum are produced.

    Irene is situated south of Pretoria and lies within the town of Centurion which is 30 minutes from the O R Tambo International Airport and 40 minutes to the Sterkfontein Caves. Close to Unitas Hospital and the State Theatre,
    Stone arrowheads and tools, discovered in the Hennops River bed and dating back many years prove that people have been living in the area for a very long time. In the 1830s, a Boer Voortrekker named Daniel Elardus Erasmus left the Cape Colony and settled in the area near present-day Irene. Seeking economic and political independence in the hinterland, Erasmus built a farm that became known as Doornkloof. In 1889 a controlling interest in Doornkloof was purchased by Alois Hugo Nellmapius. . Nellmapius renamed the farm Irene Estate, after his daughter. Irene was first proclaimed a township in 1902 by Johannes Albertus van der Byl, who had bought the Irene Estate in 1896. In 1908, General Jan Christiaan Smuts bought a third of the original Doornkloof farm. After his death, Smuts' ashes were scattered on Smuts Koppie, the longtime site of the Smuts' family home, near Doornkloof. Today, the Smuts House Museum on the site illustrates the life-style and multi-faceted career of one of South Africa's most prominent historical figures.

    CENTURION

    Irene is situated south of Pretoria and lies within the town of Centurion which is 30 minutes from the O R Tambo International Airport and 40 minutes to the Sterkfontein Caves. Close to Unitas Hospital and the State Theatre,
    Stone arrowheads and tools, discovered in the Hennops River bed and dating back many years prove that people have been living in the area for a very long time. In the 1830s, a Boer Voortrekker named Daniel Elardus Erasmus left the Cape Colony and settled in the area near present-day Irene. Seeking economic and political independence in the hinterland, Erasmus built a farm that became known as Doornkloof. In 1889 a controlling interest in Doornkloof was purchased by Alois Hugo Nellmapius. Nellmapius renamed the farm Irene Estate, after his daughter. Irene was first proclaimed a township in 1902 by Johannes Albertus van der Byl, who had bought the Irene Estate in 1896. In 1908, General Jan Christiaan Smuts bought a third of the original Doornkloof farm. After his death, Smuts' ashes were scattered on Smuts Koppie, the longtime site of the Smuts' family home, near Doornkloof. Today, the Smuts House Museum on the site illustrates the life-style and multi-faceted career of one of South Africa's most prominent historical figures.
